Autonex Highlights New Research on Sub-synchronous Oscillation Detection for Grid Stability
Autonex is excited to announce the publication of our latest paper in IEEE Sensors Letters, “Sub-synchronous Oscillation Detection Using PMU Measurements: Application to Iberian Peninsula Blackout,” addressing critical early-warning capabilities for modern power systems.
The proposed hybrid detection method leverages high-precision Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data to rapidly detect exceptionally low-frequency sub-synchronous oscillations (SSSOs) before they lead to cascading failures. By combining Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) with advanced supervised machine learning models—specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM)—this approach gives network operators vital situational awareness to intervene before blackout events occur.
Validated on real-world European grid datasets, this research demonstrates strong generalizability and offers a robust tool for enhancing grid resilience against unpredictable generation disruptions.
